  • The idea is that by changing negative thoughts and behaviours, you can improve how you feel.

  • It's a practical, hands-on approach, usually done in weekly sessions.

  • Exposure therapy is a specialized form of CBT that can help anxiety. It helps you gradually approach your fears.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Anxiety Therapy

Emily MacQuarrie. Anxiety therapist in Ontario.
  • A therapist can help you understand what's causing your anxiety and teach you ways to manage it.

They can help you recognize your triggers and develop coping strategies.

Through therapy, you can learn to change negative thought patterns and develop a more balanced outlook.

  • You need a therapist who specializes in treating anxiety. Look for someone trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or other therapies known to help with anxiety.

It's important to find a therapist who has experience working with anxiety disorders and who makes you feel comfortable - but at the same time challenges you to stop avoiding.

  • Start by asking your primary care doctor for recommendations. You can also ask friends or family if they know any good therapists.

Searching online can help too—websites like Psychology Today let you search for therapists who specialize in anxiety.

Read reviews and check their credentials to make sure they're qualified. Remember, it's important to choose someone you feel at ease with.

At Virtual CBT Psychotherapy, we have a variety of anxiety therapists to choose from.

  • There are two recommended approaches to treating anxiety:

    1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

    2. Exposure Therapy

    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a type of talk therapy that helps you identify and change negative thoughts and behaviours. It focuses on understanding the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

    Exposure Therapy

Exposure Therapy is a specific type of CBT. It helps you face your fears in a controlled and gradual way.

Both therapies are evidence-based. This means that research supports these therapies.

  • If therapy doesn't seem to be working for anxiety, there are several steps to consider:

    Get a Second Opinion

Consider getting a second opinion from another mental health professional. A fresh perspective might offer new insights and strategies. Many therapists claim to offer "CBT" but they are not a CBT expert.

At Virtual CBT, we offer free consultations. Our Clinical Directors can ask you questions about your therapy and offer guidance.

    Communicate with Your Therapist

Talk with your therapist about your concerns. They might adjust your treatment plan, and change techniques. They may suggest a different type of therapy or connect with a new therapist.

    Medication

In some cases, medication prescribed by a psychiatrist can help manage anxiety symptoms. Common medications include antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and beta-blockers.

    Lifestyle Changes

Changing your lifestyle can positively impact your mental health. Consider incorprating:

    • Regular exercise

    • A healthy diet

    • Sleep hygiene

    • Stress management techniques like mindfulness and relaxation exercises

    Support Groups

Joining a support group can provide a sense of community and understanding. Sharing experiences with others who have similar struggles can be comforting and helpful.

    Alternative Therapies

Some people find relief from anxiety through alternative therapies such as:

    • Yoga

    • Meditation

    • Acupuncture

    • Massage therapy

It's important to remember that finding the right treatment can take time. Each person's experience with anxiety is unique, so a combination of approaches might be necessary to find what works best for you.
